A brief history of New York fashion Week and TRESemmé
While popular public gatherings have taken a different direction in the COVID-19 landscape, NYFW was historically attended by thousands. Twice a year, models, designers, influencers, and celebrities from all over the globe flocked to The Big Apple for this prestigious affair.
In 1943, Eleanor Lambert created the very first New York Fashion Week. Eleanor was the press director of the American fashion industry's first promotional organisation, the New York Dress Institute. NYFW was the world’s very first official fashion week - even coming before Paris and Milan. It was initially called “Press Week” and showcased American designers to fashion journalists. This put them on the international fashion radar.

Can anyone go to NYFW?
It’s not always easy, but it is possible to attend a show or two. You don’t even have to be a big name. However, you will need to start planning 2-3 months in advance to secure your spot, as this is not a last-minute affair. If you don’t have a foot in the door, like a press pass or fashion title, it will take some effort and research. In the past, exclusive tickets could be purchased. Today, there are many shows open to the public and several streamed online. Keep your eyes open for availability at Fashion Week Online.
How do you get invited to NYFW?
Magazine editors, bloggers, influencers, models and designers are likely to get an invite, thanks to their industry notoriety. If you’re hoping to crack the nod, your best bet would be to start a fashion blog or vlog and pitch your work to NYFW affiliates.
What happens BTS?
There is an enormous amount of time, money and attention that goes into every single show. It takes an entire team of professionals months to prepare for the runway. Behind the scenes, you’ll find a flurry of models getting ready, stage designers prepping for the show and TRESemmé’s professional stylists creating art. Press teams also head behind the curtains to interview the designers and their muses.
